GERRY McINTYRE
THE MAYOR OF BROADWAY
Gerry McIntyre is a director and choreographer in demand at leading theatres across the country — and to generations of colleagues, he is simply “The Mayor of Broadway.”
The nickname stuck during the run of Anything Goes with Patti LuPone, when it became clear that Gerry knew absolutely everybody in the business. Decades later, he still does, and the title has come to describe his place in the community as much as his address book: a connector, a champion of other artists, and a familiar, generous presence wherever musical theatre is being made.
His work behind the table is built on a performer’s foundation. A professional since graduating from college in 1984, McIntyre appeared in five Broadway shows: Uptown… It’s Hot! (1986), Anything Goes (1987), Chicago (as Sgt. Fogarty), Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (1993), and the original Broadway company of Once On This Island (1990), where he played Armand, understudied Papa Ge, and served as the production’s dance captain. He returned to Joseph as Judah in the 1999 film version, starring Donny Osmond and Joan Collins, as one of only three Americans in the cast. He directs and choreographs the way he does because he has stood where his performers stand.
As a director and choreographer, his productions play the country’s top regional stages. At Walnut Street Theatre he directed and choreographed Dreamgirls (2025), having made his Walnut debut as choreographer of Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella. Pioneer Theatre Company audiences know him for Once On This Island, Ain’t Misbehavin’, Bonnie & Clyde, Putting It Together, and his choreography for Beautiful: The Carole King Musical. His long association with Berkshire Theatre Group includes Nina Simone: Four Women, A Chorus Line, Songs for a New World, and White Christmas, along with his choreography for Godspell (2020) — the first Equity-approved musical produced in America during the COVID-19 pandemic. He has directed at Ogunquit Playhouse (Ain’t Too Proud, Chicago, Jersey Boys, The Cher Show), North Shore Music Theatre (Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, The Full Monty), Casa Mañana, and La Mirada Theatre, among many others. In New York, he choreographed the international hit Spamilton — Off-Broadway, Chicago, London, and the national tour — and provided the musical staging for Forbidden Broadway: Merrily We Stole a Song, which won the 2025 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Revue. He is currently directing and choreographing Little Shop of Horrors at Pioneer Theatre Company, running October 23–November 7, 2026.
Since 2020, McIntyre has served as Associate Artistic Director of The York Theatre Company, capping a relationship with the company that spans more than thirty years. He made his York directing debut with Hallelujah, Baby! in 2018 and has since directed the company’s Oscar Hammerstein Award galas honoring Patti LuPone (2023) and Bernadette Peters (2024).
Running through all of it is a commitment to the next generation. After Hurricane Katrina, McIntyre traveled to New Orleans and staged Once On This Island with thirteen local teenagers at the storm-damaged St. Mark’s Community Center — an experience captured in Hilla Medalia’s 2009 documentary After the Storm. He continues to teach, mentor, and create room for emerging artists, including through The York’s musical theatre training programs. The Mayor, it turns out, takes care of his whole town.
