BEFORE THE TABLE, HE WAS ON THE STAGE
Every director says they understand actors. Gerry McIntyre can prove it — he spent two decades as one: five Broadway shows, Off-Broadway and readings, national tours, regional stages, film and television, before he ever sat at the director’s table.
“I’m a director, choreographer, actor, singer, and dancer. I’ve had the great fortune of being a professional since I graduated from college in 1984. I’ve never had to do anything else but my passion.”
BROADWAY
Five Broadway shows, five different rooms — and the nickname that followed him out of every one of them.
- Uptown… It’s Hot! — Ensemble (Original), understudy, 1986. His Broadway debut.
- Anything Goes — Lincoln Center revival with Patti LuPone; dancing ensemble, Photographer (Original), u/s Purser / Reporter #1 / Fred, 1987. It was here, in the company of Patti LuPone, that the nickname “The Mayor of Broadway” stuck.
- Once On This Island — original company; Armand (Original), dance captain, u/s Papa Ge, 1990.
- Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat — Judah (Original), Broadway revival, 1993, opposite Michael Damian.
- Chicago — Sgt. Fogarty (Replacement), Broadway revival, 1997–2000 era.
- Once On This Island — Reunion / Benefit Concert; Armand, benefit staging by Gerry, 2002.
JOSEPH, TWICE
He played Judah on Broadway in the 1993 revival of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, opposite Michael Damian. Six years later he played him again — on film, in the 1999 movie version, opposite Donny Osmond and Joan Collins, as “Benjamin Calypso.” He was one of only three Americans in the cast.
OFF-BROADWAY, TOURS AND THE ROAD
Off-Broadway, he played Don Baxter, Franklin and Peabody in Enter Laughing at the York Theatre Company (2008 revival and 2009 return), Father / Ferryman in The Audience (2006), and appeared in Broadway Jukebox, Sidd, Forbidden Broadway and Joan of Arc at the Stake with Glenn Close and William Hurt. At the York he was part of the first musical reading in the Developmental Reading Series — Barnstormer (Cheryl L. Davis / Douglas J. Cohen), 2003, with LaChanze.
On the road: the national tour of Whistle Down the Wind; Annie 2 — Punjab (the ill-fated Annie 2); and three years as the Ghost of Christmas Present in A Christmas Carol at Madison Square Garden, opposite Tim Curry, Jim Dale and F. Murray Abraham.
STILL STEPPING OUT
He still steps out when the part is right — Big Daddy Brubeck in Sweet Charity at Pioneer Theatre Company (2014), Alexander Yardley in Christmas in Connecticut at Pioneer (2023) — and Christmas Present in A Christmas Carol: The Musical at Pioneer (2012). Regional credits also include The Producers and Anything Goes at WV Public Theatre, Chicago at Riverside Theatre, and Sweeney Todd at Gateway Playhouse.
FILM, TELEVISION AND RECORDINGS
Film: Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (1999), Stealing Martin Lane (2005), Broadway Damage (1997), The Next Step (1997), The Kiss, and After the Storm (2009), as himself. Television: Boardwalk Empire, Whoopi, Law & Order, The Jamie Foxx Show, The Pretender, The Nanny, Murphy Brown, NYPD Blue and Caroline in the City. Recordings: the original Broadway cast recording of Once On This Island (1990), the 1987 revival recording of Anything Goes (1988), Enter Laughing (2010) — and Spamilton (2017), as choreographer.
