THE NEXT GENERATION
Gerry McIntyre has spent his career making theatre — and much of it making sure someone else can make it after him.
He has handed the craft down to teenagers in New Orleans, campers in Louisville, schoolkids in New Jersey, the training programs at the York, and a first-time playwright.
AFTER THE STORM
In 2006, in the months after Hurricane Katrina, Gerry directed and choreographed Once On This Island performed by 13 local teenagers at the storm-damaged St. Mark’s Community Center in New Orleans, working with James Lecesne and Randy Redd. Hilla Medalia’s documentary After the Storm (2009) followed the project; it screened at MoMA and the LA Film Festival. PopMatters called him “a very empathetic director/choreographer.” The After the Storm Foundation continues to support New Orleans youth organisations.
“MENTORED COUNTLESS YOUNG PERFORMERS”
A 2016 account put it plainly: Gerry “has taught children’s theatre and mentored countless young performers…” — and the count is still going.
IN THE CLASSROOM
At ACT Louisville in 2021, he served as a Broadway panelist for the youth summer camps — students from grade 3 through college (Beth Craig Hall, ACT Louisville). In 2011 he gave dance master classes at Ridge High School and William Annin Middle School in Bernardsville, New Jersey, including a Fosse-style class and “We Dance” from Once On This Island for the Spring Dance Showcase. He donated a 90-minute dance class under his tutelage to the York’s 50th-anniversary “Uniquely York” auction in 2020, and judged the “Rising Star” celebrity panel for Give My Regards (Spot-On Arts Academy) in 2020–21. The York Theatre Company’s musical theatre training programs carry the work on.
NEW WORK, NEW WRITERS
Gerry has made a habit of first stagings: the 2026 regional premiere of Chess Jakobs’ debut play, The American Five, at Berkshire Theatre Group (“pinpoint direction and choreography”); the 2005 world premiere of Andrea Frierson-Toney’s musical Soon of a Mornin’ at NYMF; original choreographer of Spamilton (2016), Gerard Alessandrini’s hit, in Chicago, London and on tour; Forbidden Broadway: The Next Generation (2019) and Forbidden Broadway: Merrily We Stole a Song (2024), which won the 2025 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Revue; and Hallelujah, Baby! (2018), his York directing debut. He has been Associate Artistic Director of the York Theatre Company since 2020 — the only New York theatre dedicated to developing and producing new musicals, with more than 40 readings a year, which incubated Avenue Q. He was on the creative team for MTI‘s global All Together Now! event in 2021. First stagings under his direction and choreography include the regional premiere of The Cher Show at Ogunquit and the first professional Utah mounting of Bonnie & Clyde at Pioneer in 2024.
Every generation of Broadway stands on the one before it. Gerry McIntyre is how the craft gets passed — one rehearsal room, one classroom, one brand-new show at a time.
